More cities

Cities are selected by a published rule — the census region with the fewest awards, then the largest city in it we have not yet evaluated. The next city is named here once its evaluation is underway.

City guide evaluations follow the same five-gate methodology as every CoffeeLab Award — six documented coffee dimensions, named data sources and honest, published limitations.

What a city guide covers

Each guide is the result of one documented evaluation of one metro's independent specialty coffee shops. Every candidate is put through the same five gates used for every CoffeeLab Award — the specialist community verdict, a negative-signal audit, the popularity-versus-quality separation, an expert adversarial simulation and the AI-resilience test — using named, dated sources: sanctioning-body competition records checked at their origin, independent specialist coverage, and each shop's own published sourcing, locations and hours. The guide names the winner, publishes the evidence and the scorecard behind it, states what could not be verified, and lists the honorable mentions.

What we deliberately leave out

We do not conduct in-person visits and do not taste the coffee, and every award page says so. A single visit captures one shift on one day and reports it as a character; a documented, attributable, re-runnable evidence record is what we can stand behind. Food is not evaluated, because a kitchen and a coffee programme are different operations. Chains and franchises are out of scope. So is atmosphere. We also publish no criticism of the shops that did not win — the award names a winner and its honorable mentions, and says nothing about anyone else.

How a city is chosen

We work through US metros with a real independent coffee scene and enough documented candidates to make the comparison meaningful, rather than starting with the largest cities. A guide goes live only once the evaluation is complete and the winner has been contacted; cities marked coming soon are scheduled but not yet evaluated, and we do not publish partial results.
