⭐ Honorable Mention — CoffeeLab Award 2026, Best Overall Espresso Machine →

The Breville Barista Express is the original all-in-one espresso machine: a built-in conical burr grinder and a 54mm group in a single footprint, designed for beginners who want a complete setup without separate equipment. It is a capable entry point, but its integrated grinder is the main compromise. For buyers who already plan to use a dedicated grinder, adding one to the Express is less efficient than simply upgrading to the Barista Pro.

This machine includes a built-in grinder — see our verdict below on how it compares to pairing the machine with a dedicated grinder.

A capable all-in-one starter with a built-in grinder and 54mm group. Because the grinder is integrated, moving to a separate grinder changes the workflow rather than replacing a standalone component.

Shot Quality

The Barista Express extracts through Breville's standard 54mm portafilter, shared with the Bambino, Bambino Plus and Barista Pro, so accessories are common. The ThermoCoil heating system brings the group to temperature and Breville's digital temperature control holds it steady, which produces repeatable extractions for a machine at this price. The built-in grinder grinds fresh on demand, which is a genuine convenience, but its conical burrs and limited fine-adjustment range are the weak link: dialling in very fine espresso grinds is fiddly, and the grinder holds back the machine's ceiling. With the integrated grinder the shots are good but not great; bypassing it with a dedicated espresso grinder improves clarity noticeably, which is exactly why our pairing content recommends an external grinder for this machine. In summary, the Express makes good, repeatable espresso for beginners, and its ceiling is set by the integrated grinder rather than the group, which is the main thing to understand before you buy.

Steam & Milk

The Barista Express has a manual steam wand with decent power for its class, capable of latte-art-grade microfoam with practice. Because it is a single boiler, you brew first and then wait for the boiler to reach steam temperature, which makes back-to-back milk drinks slower than on a thermojet machine. It handles plant-based milks reasonably well, and we rate it 4 out of 5 for plant-milk support. The wand is manual rather than automatic, so consistency with oat and soy depends on your technique. Milk-forward drinkers who want automatic texturing would be better served by the Bambino Plus, which steams automatically and heats up faster, while espresso-first users will find the wand perfectly adequate. Overall the Express is a capable all-rounder for manual-steam users, and the slower brew-to-steam transition is the main daily trade-off against faster thermojet machines. In practice the transition between brew and steam is the main thing to learn, and once you do, the manual wand is capable of very good milk.

Who It's For

The Barista Express is for beginners who want a complete espresso setup in one box: grinder, group and steam wand together, with no separate equipment to buy or learn. It is the classic first serious machine and remains a popular entry point. The honest counter-case is that if you already own or plan to buy a dedicated grinder, the built-in unit is redundant, and adding an external grinder to the Express is less efficient than simply upgrading to the Barista Pro, which has a faster ThermoJet heater and a better grinder. If the all-in-one convenience is the point and budget is tight, the Express works; if you want the same format with a higher ceiling, the Pro is the better buy. That makes the Express a sound first all-in-one for budget-conscious beginners, with the understanding that the grinder, not the machine, is what you will outgrow first. It is the sensible first all-in-one when budget matters, and the integrated grinder is a genuine convenience for new users.

Build & Value

The Barista Express uses Breville's familiar brushed stainless steel body and die-cast frame, with the brand's two-year warranty. It is a solid consumer build rather than a serviceable commercial one, but parts and support are widely available. At roughly $685 it undercuts the Barista Pro by about $165 and includes a grinder, which looks like strong value on paper. The real value question is whether the integrated grinder is worth paying for: it is convenient but limited, and buyers who intend to add a dedicated grinder should skip it entirely and put the money toward a better machine. For a true all-in-one first setup the Express remains a reasonable, popular and capable entry point. Taken together, the Express is a fair-value entry into espresso, and buyers should decide between it and the Barista Pro based on whether the faster heater and better grinder are worth the premium. The value depends on whether the convenience of the built-in grinder matters to you more than the machine's ceiling.

Breville Barista Express — FAQ

Is the built-in grinder on the Barista Express good enough?

For beginners, yes — it grinds fresh on demand and is convenient. But its conical burrs and limited fine-adjustment range make precise espresso dialling fiddly, and it holds back the machine's ceiling. A dedicated espresso grinder noticeably improves shot quality, which is why our pairing content recommends an external grinder. The limited fine adjustment and conical burrs are the reasons the machine's ceiling sits below what the group can deliver with a better grinder.

Is the Barista Express worth it vs the Barista Pro?

If you want an all-in-one and the budget allows, the Pro is the better buy: its ThermoJet heats in about 3 seconds versus the Express's slower ThermoCoil, its grinder has 30 settings versus 15, and it switches between brew and steam faster. The Express makes sense on a tighter budget. The faster heat-up alone is worth most of the premium for daily use, and the better grinder is the rest of it.

What portafilter size does the Barista Express use?

54mm — Breville's standard size, shared with the Bambino, Bambino Plus and Barista Pro. Baskets, dosing funnels and tampers are widely available and inexpensive, though the smaller size means a smaller accessory ecosystem than the 58mm commercial standard. The 54mm size keeps accessories cheap and common, which is a practical bonus for first-time owners. The shared size also means you can carry accessories over to another Breville machine later.

Is the Barista Express good for beginners?

Yes — it is designed for beginners, with a built-in grinder, digital temperature control and guided dose control. It removes the need for separate equipment and is one of the friendliest all-in-ones to learn on, though the grinder's limited fine adjustment takes some getting used to. The guided dose control and built-in grinder mean there is very little to learn before your first good shot.

Does the Barista Express work well with plant-based milk?

Reasonably well. The manual steam wand has decent power and can texture oat and soy with practice, and we rate it 4 out of 5 for plant-milk support. For consistent automatic texturing, the Bambino Plus's auto wand is easier and faster, so milk-forward drinkers may prefer it. If you drink mostly milk drinks and want consistent texture without practice, the automatic wand on the Plus is the easier route.
